Target Audience

The magazine I am doing research on is W. This magazine caters to influential luxury consumers, mainly woman from their 20's to 30's. This is seen with not only how the magazine presents itself, but also the ads they feature from skincare products to the newest shoes all directly relating to their target audience, which are woman who care about how they look. The magazine was created in 1972 by the publisher of sister magazine Women's Wear Daily, James Brady. W is an American fashion magazine  that feature numerous different styles and diverse content published by Conde Nast. The editor in chief herself has said, “If we believe in magazines, we have to change and adapt to the new world. In the new world, magazines have to be a beautiful product that you want to collect. If we call a magazine a luxury product, it should look like a luxury product,” which  explains why the magazine is positioned as a "luxury" collectible .  The  magazine is distributed through hard copies and online and their total subscription according to their fact sheet from 2007 is 499,022 and total circulation is 457,996. Now it still remains with high sales and subscriptions  due to the fact that their target audience is looking for luxury, not basic needs, which is what W offers.

This information is very useful and relevant for when thinking of who my magazines audience should be and what my magazine has to include to appease to that specific audience. I now know that I have to think of what branding I want for my magazine. For instance, I need to decide whether it will be a monthly magazine or perhaps a luxury collectible like W magazine. This research has helped me get ideas on how my fashion magazine can feature more than just one specific clothing type but I could go from gala outfits to street style and that would be fine.
